Database Access (DB) WG

• Mandate:
  In the last few years diverse communities have faced the problem of accessing preexisting and independently operated databases from grid infrastructures. This requirement is common to many e-Science projects that want to use the EGEE grid environment, including, for example, bioinformatics (genetic and protein databases), earth science (XML data sources of metadata), and astronomy (observational datasets).  While database access is a common need, detailed requirements are diverse and probably necessitate different solutions for different use cases.

The need to integrate databases and databases technology in the grid environment has been already recognized as a core research activity by the grid community; some tools and services have been developed for this purpose.  This working group aims to survey the use cases, identify existing solutions, and make recommendations to facilitate use of those solution on the EGEE grid infrastructure.  

Detailed objectives:

1. Survey requirements of existing applications and identify the core use cases for database access from the grid infrastructure.
2. Survey the currently-used techniques and existing tools to access databases from the grid infrastructure.
3. Make recommendations of particular tools for each identified use case, or identify gaps that require development.
4. Make recommendations for changes in the gLite services or service/site configurations to facilitate use of database access tools on the grid infrastructure.
